Legislation and Initiatives
Child Care Licensing Act
This legislation establishes a new child care licensing model that shifts the emphasis from licensing facilities to one of licensing programs, reflecting that it is programs that offer the most benefit to children and families and not a facility.
Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act
The Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act supports the development and well-being of Alberta's children, youth and families while keeping them safe and protected. It is groundbreaking legislation that responds to the needs of today's families and demonstrates the Alberta government's commitment to children.
Drug-endangered Children Act
On November 1, 2006, Alberta became the first jurisdiction in Canada to address this emerging social issue through the Drug-endangered Children Act. This legislation makes it clear that children exposed to an adult's involvement in serious drug activity, such as manufacturing and trafficking, are victims of abuse and need protection.
Family and Community Support Services Act
Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is an 80/20 funding partnership between the Government of Alberta, and municipalities or Metis Settlements. Provincially, the FCSS Program receives its mandate from the Family and Community Support Services Act and Regulation.
Family Support for Children with Disabilities Act
Family support services are available to families caring for a child with a diagnosed disability or to families who are awaiting confirmation of their child's diagnosis. These services are primarily based on the needs as identified by the family.
Protection Against Family Violence Act
Family violence has devastating consequences on families and communities throughout the province. In order to end to this cycle of abusive behaviour, the Government of Alberta has made preventing family violence one of its top priorities. As part of its response, the Government of Alberta introduced new legislation to protect even more people from family violence.
Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act
Help is available to children sexually exploited through prostitution through the Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act. The Act recognizes that children involved in prostitution are victims of sexual abuse and allows police and caseworkers to remove sexually exploited children from dangerous situations to ensure their safety and well-being.
Social Care Facilities Review Committee Act
The Social Care Facilities Review Committee is a citizens' panel that conducts visits to a sampling of social care facilities throughout Alberta every year. The Committee members receive feedback about the services provided to determine recipients' satisfaction with those services.
